"Cairo Citadel" the most famous historical landmark in Egypt
Cairo is full of historical and Islamic
monuments that form the identity of this ancient city, and one of the most
important of these features is the castle that was founded by Al-Nasir li-Din
Allah for his state “The Saladin Citadel”
The Citadel
of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, or how it is called, “Cairo Citadel” due to its
location on the Mokattam Mountain. It was founded by Al-Nasir li-Din Allah in 1176 AD, but he did not complete it in his
life, and it was completed by Al-Malik Al-Kamil Ibn Al-Adil, so he was the
first to inhabit it and take it as a residence for the king
The citadel is
considered one of the most luxurious citadels that were built in the Middle
Ages, which is distinguished by its huge architectural beauty that amazes the
world, and the most admired buildings in the citadel is that well that Salah
al-Din al-Ayyubi dug for the army's watering, because the well is dug into the
rock at a depth of 90 meters from the level of the castle's land.This required
a lot of effort at the time
The castle
witnessed many important historical events during the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras
and the time of the French campaign against Egypt in 1798 AD, and until
Muhammad Ali Pasha took over the rule of Egypt, where he restored its
prosperity and greatness, and he built his mosque, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali
or the Alabaster Mosque, as it is called or the Al Marmar Mosque, which was similar
to Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul
The citadel
includes many monuments of historical value, the most important of which are
the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Mosque and School of Al-Nasir Qalawun, the Mosque
of Suliman Pasha El-Khadem, the Mosque of Ahmed Katkhda Azban, and it also
includes the Al-Jawhara Palace, the Haram Palace and the Al-Ablaq Palace, in
addition to the Military Museum and the Police Museum
