El Korba Square is an architectural masterpiece of Egypt built by a foreigner
El Korba Square is an open museum
without walls. This square was built by a foreigner and it becomes Egypt's most
famous square. It is filled with many architectural masterpieces of ancient
style.
El Korba Square is characterized by
its triangular shape as it starts from Al-Ahram Street starting from the
Heliopolis Hotel (now the Presidential Palace) until the Basilica Church and
Nazih Khalifa Street (formerly Baron) that intersects with Al-Thawra Street
until Baron Empain Palace, and from inside Al-Korba Baghdad Street that also
meets Al-Thawra Street. The naming of the square with this name “El Korba” is
due to the street being turned around, unlike the usual streets at that time,
and the word in Italian means a bend or an arc. As the metro used to take a
bend or turn around in this place on its return journey coming from Fouad Al
Awal Street (Downtown), so the Belgian conductor used to call out the word (Korp), which
became thename for this place.
This three-sided square was
distinguished by huge buildings designed with a unique architecture at the
hands of Baron Empain, and from this square was the beginning of Heliopolis, with its historical bouquets,
which is famous for the square of Korba and far from the timeless architectural
masterpiece the “Palace of the Baron Empain” . As well as the palace of "Baghos
Nubar Pasha", there are three historical evidences that bear witness to
the nobility of Korba, and are: the Basilica Church and the Church of the
Korba, the Heliopolis Palace Hotel (now the Presidential Palace), and the jewel
in the crown of Korba which the work began on it in 1906 and was opened in 1910
in a grand ceremony.
This is the first building in El
Korba in which the Belgian “Ernst Jassbar” participated, as he set the general
design for it while the French Alexander Marcel placing its interior
decorations taken from the works of Arab inscriptions.
The palace was two hundred meters
and topped by a dome height of 55 meters ٬
and it has luxurious halls for receptions, and 400 rooms that are luxuriously
furnished, and its main hall is circular specially woven for its Iranian
carpets and its diameter was 30 meters.
The second masterpiece is the Church
of the Baron or the Basilica of the Basilica, which was built by one of the
most important builders of Heliopolis, the French Alexander Marcel, in 1910, at
the request of Baron Empain, and was from his own money and away from the
Heliopolis Oasis Company at that time. The church drawings were placed in the
Byzantine style, which is a miniature image of the Hagia Sophia Cathedral in
Istanbul. The Basilica Church is located at the beginning of the Al-Ahram
Street. After the death of Baron Empain, the church became part of the
inheritance of his second son, Louis, and the Louis family later donated it to
the Catholic Church in Egypt.
